Nichola Scrutton: The Open Fund for Music Creators

Album recording & release

Nichola Scrutton is an award-winning composer, vocalist and artist based in Glasgow, Scotland. Nichola works across a range of mediums and processes including sound and soundscape composition, performance, improvisation and drawing. Ongoing fascinations in her work include breath, voice, body and presence, materiality, environment, interweaving real and re-imagined fictional sound worlds through ideas of inner and outer landscapes.

Nichola often experiments with what is communicated in voice performance beyond spoken/sung words. She combines abstract and expressive materials to create sonorous states or experiences with potentially new narratives. Nichola is currently developing a new body of work, which has at its core a series of night journals with a working title Night Vision. Those texts, and the experimental writing process, were a very different starting place for Nichola as a composer, and are serving as a catalyst for further exploration of ways to dynamically sculpt vocal sound, field recordings and found sound.

Her work-in-progress, supported by Creative Scotland, includes a new ensemble performance, and composing materials for a solo recording project. For the latter, the PRS Foundation Open Fund award will support Nichola to record a debut solo album to be released on the Nonclassical label in 2022.
