Cottonopolis - A New Commission for Brass Band by Andy Scott

BBE are commissioning music from composer Andy Scott that challenges musicians and audiences alike, broadening musical horizons of the genre introducing new ideas, styles and approaches.
“Cottonopolis” – the name given to the city of Manchester will be a substantial contemporary piece of music based around the amazing historic and cultural diversity of the City from the Industrial revolution into modern times. Inspiration for the creation of this representative musical timeline would be drawn from a number of sources. The industrial revolution. Emmeline Pankhurst leader of the Suffragette movement. The Manchester Ship canal enabling the Port of Manchester to become Britain’s third busiest port. Peter Maxwell Davies’s the New Music Manchester group, with members Harrison Birtwistle, Alexander Goehr, Elgar Howarth and John Ogdon. Madchester, the pop and rock revolution. The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, The Smiths, The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, New Order and Oasis.

In its final stages the work will reference the horror of the terror attacks at the Manchester arena, concluding with a representation of the incredible show of defiance, resilience and solidarity demonstrated by the people following the atrocity.

Andy Scott’s distinctive compositional voice speaks with a unique and effective mix of jazz, world music and contemporary classical elements that will challenge and inspire many people within and outside of the Brass Band genre. Recently Andy has had works premiered at the Carnegie Hall NYC, Purcell Room and Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and Royal Albert Hall.
