Hansel & Gretel

Goldfield Productions have commissioned Matthew Kaner to compose the chamber music for Hansel & Gretel, a new theatrical touring stage-work for 2018! Hansel & Gretel is a re-imagining of the famous tale that draws audiences into a dark, quirky yet curiously familiar landscape. Kaner’s Music weaves its way around spoken-word poetry by Simon Armitage and puppetry, shadow-play and animation master-minded by artist Clive Hicks-Jenkins. Hansel & Gretel will premiere at Cheltenham Music Festival and tour to 8 further venues. Hansel & Gretel is produced by Kate Romano and performed by members of the Goldfield Ensemble.

Goldfield Productions curate projects that enable outstanding and distinctive classical/contemporary composers at different career stages develop and flourish. Matthew Kaner’s critically acclaimed music has been described as ‘exhilarating and haunting…striking craftsmanship…riveting and entirely personal’. Recipient of an RPS award, Kaner has composed for leading orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra and London Sinfonietta. He was BBC Radio 3’s Embedded Composer in 2016 where his 10 commissioned works achieved the Breakfast Show’s highest audience reach in six years. Hansel & Gretel places the ‘dark, wild energy’ (Interlude HK) and ‘accomplished, imaginative, sensuous beauty’ (Telegraph) of Kaner’s music at the heart of this rich theatrical synergy of mixed-media art/poetry.
