Martha Hill: PPL Momentum Grantee
“their music is inseparable from it’s place of origin, infused with northern spirit and humour”- CLASH
“on-the-nose lyricisms concerning the mundanity of life, and packed full of their unique take on pop music”- The Line of Best Fit
“I love listening to Martha Hill”- BBC Radio 1
Northern musician Martha Hill makes alt-pop that is both hard hitting and catchy as hell.
With their latest EP “Dog Hearted Man” being championed by the likes of Radio 1’s Annie Mac and Jack Saunders, as well as features in CLASH and The Line of Best Fit, it’s no wonder Martha Hill has been awarded the PPL Momentum fund to help them in the creation of their next project.
Hill left their home on the west coast of Scotland aged 17 to busk around Europe, before settling down in Newcastle and throwing themself into the UK music scene, self-releasing their debut EP “Be Still” in October 2019. 2020 saw Hill being tipped as one of BBC Introducing’s “ones to watch”, followed by a feature on Jools Holland. They released their second EP Summer Up North that June, with singles playlisted on BBC6music, as well as “Grilled Cheese” being named BBC Introducing’s Track of the Week.
Gloriously confident, Martha Hill weaves their unique take on pop melodies over a backdrop of guitars, cellos and synths, thriving in reinvention and fusion. An energy of husky vocals and melodic hooks, their introspective storytelling picks apart the mundanity of life with northern spirit and humour.
