Shakira Walters: Power Up Industry Professional
Shakira Walters
Shakira Walters is the Founding Director of GIRLSofGRIME and Talent Manager at Moor Music Management. Her mission is to raise the profiles of women in music, across various Black music genres and build a diverse & inclusive music industry.
Inspired by the emergence of UK Grime’s do-it-yourself culture, its disruptive nature of demanding real stories be heard, and resilience to the mainstream music industry & live space, Shakira launched GIRLSofGRIME in 2017. The community focused talent development & live performance platform, aims to empower the next generation of female artists and professionals by offering support to facilitate their pathways to success in music.
The organisation has hosted live showcases with The National Theatre, Somerset House, Wireless Festival, Amazon Music, and most recently The Great Escape 2023 with BBC Music Introducing. GIRLSofGRIME has also produced various radio shows, for broadcasters including Rinse FM, BBC 1xtra, KISS FM and Reprezent Radio.
In 2020, GIRLSofGRIME was an awardee of the PRS Foundation’s Open Fund, producing their first digital ‘live’ showcase, LOCKED+LIVE. The organisation has curated a number of DJ, Artist and Producer workshops and with Shakira previously being an A&R at Warner Music, she executively produced GIRLSofGRIME’s debut single, ‘Crop Tops & Hoodies’, the official track for International Women’s Day 2023.
