Sinfonia Cymru: New music by ground-breaking Welsh composer-communicators

Sinfonia Cymru fulfils a vital need in the music sector as an under 30s chamber orchestra, dedicated to championing outstanding young professional musicians from Wales, the UK and beyond, helping them to grow their experience in the early stages of their careers. We provide exceptional-quality musical experiences for audiences and participants in Wales and further afield. A key part of our vision is that far more people from a diversity of backgrounds in Wales have access to and attend live classical performances. We have become known for tackling perceptions of classical music; we experiment with formats, finding new ways to make classical music meaningful to a broader, more diverse audience.

This project supports three Welsh composers to create cross-genre works for chamber ensemble/orchestra, to be premiered and toured by Sinfonia Cymru. The composers – Simmy Singh, David Roche, Patrick Rimes – come from wildly different areas of Wales but share a passion for creating music that is accessible to listeners, while conveying powerful messages and pushing the boundaries of classical music.

David Roche (from Newport) is a guitarist and multi-award-winning orchestral composer. Collaboration with SC provides his first opportunity to combine these specialisms. Violinist Simmy Singh (from Llandeilo) is an Earth Activist Musician who deploys her music as a powerful tool to restore our bond with nature. Patrick Rimes (from Snowdonia) is a founder-member of the multi-award-winning Welsh folk-band Calan. Collaboration with SC will build bridges between traditional folk and classical music, while celebrating Welsh language and landscapes.
