Priti Paintal: The Composers’ Fund
Priti Paintal will be exploring my musical language for 2 instruments that they have previously not written for – the double-bass and the guitar.
By working with outstanding musicians – Craig Ogden, Maya Youssef and Leon Bosch and bringing cross-cultural musicians together from Europe and Asia Priti Paintal will be developing a programme of new pieces for guitar, double-bass and plucked instruments from different cultures including middle-Eastern qanun, the Indian sarod, Japanese koto and the harpsichord.
These pieces will be recorded for a CD produced by ShivaNova and distributed via Universal. Possible partnerships with associated recording labels will also be developed.
Priti Paintal is regarded as a pioneer in the cross-cultural music field. She is known as a composer, music producer and promoter. Born in Delhi, her family includes Indian and Western- rained musicians alongside eminent scientists and doctors. Her music brings together classical performers in a unique mix of cross-cultural and contemporary flair as reflected in her ensemble ShivaNova.
She has also written for opera and performers have included the Philharmonia Orchestra, the City of London Sinfonia, Bournemouth Sinfonietta, the Balanescu and Bingham string quartets. In 2007 she established Equator and has been commissioning composers as part of their WOW series.

It is a great boost to be awarded a Composers’ Bursary. After my partner’s death – the music journalist Robert Maycock – I had not been able to write for these last few years especially with needing to take care of our young children.
