Vanishing: Open Fund for Music Creators
Developing and performance of new live show, supporting new release
Based in Manchester, Vanishing is the work of Gareth Smith an artist and ex-engineer from Hull. Smith assembles music that reflects these industrial roots. Words are his raw material; storytelling, communication that is created, assembled, and reworked until meaning and purpose is found.
Vanishing creates music, movement pieces and film to help shape each story, using a shifting cast of collaborators, changing with each project. New album, ‘Shelter of the Opaque’, featuring modular electronics, string ensemble, woodwind and organ is the most ambitious work to date and is due for release in March 2024 on State51.
Vanishing will use the PRS Foundation award to support to the development and live performance of new shows exploring the new album ‘Shelter of the Opaque’.
‘Shelter of the Opaque’ is Vanishing’s most ambitious work to date. During R&D, the recorded album materials will be produced and reassembled for a live context; improvised sections will be scored and reworked for dynamic live performance, keeping the integrity of the recordings.
Two unique live sets will be produced; one for large ensemble featuring all aspects of the album including string, electronics, spoken word and woodwind, able to fully realise the recording, the other, for a smaller ensemble that offers a more minimal adaptation of the recordings.
A series of live shows will take place after the release the album that showcase both line ups, maximising the impact around the release and providing Vanishing with alternative ways to sustain the album campaign.
