Kokoroko: Women Make Music
Soul shaking West African roots and inner London hues
KOKOROKO play music they love, that they grew up with and that their parents got funky to. Inspired by Fela Kuti, Ebo Taylor, Tony Allen and the great sounds that come out of West Africa, they put on a performance to honour the masters that taught them. They specialise in a soul shaking, horn fueled sound with West African roots and inner London hues.
Led by bandleader Sheila Maurice-Grey, they’ve grown out of young, London-rooted creative circles, many of their members performing in other groups firing the UK’s jazz-influenced, genre-blurring momentum. They featured on the We Out Here compilation earlier this year, a celebrated primer on that bright-burning jazz scene, and they’ve performed at venues ranging from the iconic Ronnie Scott’s to the V&A Museum.
