Around Britten

In 2012 we awarded Matthew Barley a grant for his project Around Britten which celebrates Benjamin Britten’s centenary with an ambitious national tour during 2013 involving concerts, workshops and special events in at least 100 venues across the UK.

In what promises to be a fascinating and intriguing solo show, showcasing his ever-growing virtuosity as a world-renowned cellist, Barley places Britten’s powerful Third Cello Suite – dedicated to and first performed by the great Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich – at the centre of a programme which also includes a suite by J.S. Bach, who greatly inspired Britten. The programme also includes solo cello music by Tavener and specially-commissioned new works by Dai Fujikura, James MacMillan and DJ Jan Bang.

With the music of Britten taking centre stage in this centenary year, Matthew’s tour is sure to be a popular attraction around the country. Use the button below fund about more about the project and a tour date new you.
