PRS Foundation Daily SXSW Update – Wednesday 14th March

Welcome to Thursday’s SXSW Roundup email from PRS Foundation, the UK’s leading independent charitable funder of new music and talent development.

We hope your shoes are holding up better than ours after running around 4 incredible UK-led showcase nights!

Start your day right with some of our highlights from yesterday and another packed roundup of tips for the coming day. Listen here to our #FundedbyPRSF SXSW 2018 playlist while you plan your day. We count at least 46 opportunities today to catch your next favourite #FundedbyPRSF artists today!

We spoke to Jerry Williams about her journey to Austin, watch it here. ICYMI yesterday, click here to watch Blue Lab Beats talk funding and SXSW too.

PRS Foundation staff highlights from yesterday:

We caught amazing sessions at the Convention Centre, starting with Lyor Cohen’s much anticipated Keynote (featuring South London’s Moses Boyd as warm up!), Steve Albini and Kim Deal in fascinating conversation, an always heart-warming and mind-opening discussion from our Talent Development Partner Heart n Soul, then finishing up with news from the SXSW Songs camp which featured 3 ISF-supported writer-producers. So it was very nice of Only Girl to make sure her US debut show was right next to all the action. We can’t recommend catching her enough!

Our friends PPL and PRS teamed up with Jo Whiley and Radio 2 to present last night’s British Music Embassy gig. We were floored by North East ‘Sounds Of’ listed Sam Fender. Don’t be surprised to see a lot more of him over the summer.

And our real highlight of last night was watching 3 ‘Nations’ – Wales, Scotland and the ‘Outernation’ – doing the UK proud. Kicking things off, FOCUS Wales hosted an array of Welsh talent, including Dan Bettridge. The Glaswegian Buckaroo showed us just how strong the DIY scene in Glasgow is, with Catholic Action winning everyone over (again!), and LAPS getting everyone dancing. And the Jazz re:freshed Outernational showcase was one big London scene celebration. We can’t decide which of Nubya, Zara, Ashley, Moses, Ezra Collective or Blue Lab Beats are going blow up biggest so you’re just going to have to delve in yourselves.

Our UK Tips for Thursday 15th March:

  1. International Showcase Fund artists playing today include the super-fun Superorganism, Keychange artist Suzi Wu, Yxng Bane, Goat Girl, Only Girl, Our Girl and Girl Ray (#girlpower)
  2. Make sure you swing by Reeperbahn’s gathering from 4pm for their world famous Hamburger reception, and come and say hi to several Keychange partner festivals who are signing up to a ‘50/50 by 2022’ pledge to tackle gender inequality head on. If you’re involved in a festival and want to sign up, come say hi.
  • Following the inspiring Neurodiversity panel yesterday, The Fish Police get two chances to shine a light on multiple universe concepts of frontman Dean Rodney Jr. Catch them at the Flatstock Stage (2.30pm) then The Hideout (11pm).

Non-UK Tip of the Day: Lido Pimienta, 8.30pm, Mohawk Indoor

Daily shout out to partners’ events:

From 12-1pm today, our friends at SMIA are hosting the first ever ‘Scottish Networking Event’ in Fado`s on 214 West 4th St. We’re sure all the bands from last night will be on good form and the Irn Bru rumours are true. See you there.
