Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council

We are very pleased to announce Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council as the latest recipients of the David Bedford Music Education Award.

This award will be given four times a year to exceptional music education projects involving composers and new music, selected and funded by PRS for Music Foundation.

Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council successfully applied to PRS for Music Foundation throught the Funding for Organisations & Groups scheme for the creation of a new work to celebrate the centenary of one of the most culturally significant buildings in South Wales; The Park and Dare Theatre, Treorci. This former Miners’ Institutes Theatre was built on the weekly contributions from the wages of the local workforce on a penny in the pound basis.

This new work, whilst being contemporary, will reflect the rich history of the building and the area and will engage a whole range of members of the community including schools, students, instrumentalists and singers through a series of workshops and open rehearsals both in the creation and the performance of the work.

On receiving this special award Geoff Cripps, Artistic Director of Rhondda Cyon TAf Theatres, said:
“We are delighted and honoured to have been chosen for this award. RCT Cultural Services and RCT Music Services have an established collaborative working relationship that has produced some exciting creative work with young musicians and professional musicians. We are looking forward to seeing this particular project blossom.  The Park & Dare Theatre is an iconic and special building at the heart of the communities of the Rhondda Valleys.  We are sure that the local people’s involvement in the creation and production of this musical work will deliver a fulsome and apposite musical tribute both in live performances and on CD.”
