Music in the Round

Music in the Round were awarded the David Bedford Music Education Award in the July 2013 round of funding for ‘Stan and Mabel’ – the fourth new work composed by Paul Rissmann, their Children’s Composer in Residence since 2010.

On winning the special award they told us:

Winning the David Bedford Music Education Award for ‘Stan and Mabel’ is tremendously important to us and we hope will help us reach even more children, families and schools with our unique offer.  All four pieces of Paul Rissmann’s new works have been performed by the versatile and extremely talented Ensemble 360 and narrator Polly Ives. These specially commissioned works, which include lively audience participation, colourful image projections from the books and complementary music from classical composers such as Rossini, Mozart and Delibes, get positive feedback from young and old audiences alike. They tour to packed houses up and down the country, including London’s Wigmore Hall, reaching around 10,000 people each year.  Paul’s second piece, The Chimpanzees of Happytown, won the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors’ Award, Education Category in 2012.

Polly Ives, Education and Outreach Manager for Music in the Round, and narrator of their popular children’s concerts added of the David Bedford Award:

“Getting this award for Stan and Mabel is a fantastic accolade and we’re over the moon about it. Stan and Mabel is a hugely exciting project that will not only enthuse and inspire lots of very young children and their grown-ups in Sheffield, but will also entertain families around the UK and encourage budding young musicians. The combination of Paul Rissmann’s music, Jason Chapman’s book and the world-class musicians from Ensemble 360 is exactly what we need to get young people and their grown-ups loving live world-class classical music.”
